I just recently finished reading the Digital Antiquarian’s ebook from 1998. That’s volume 20 (!) and once again a very enjoyable read. The final chapter details the last adventures of Legend with a passing mention of Companions of Xanth. A game I remember reading about in the magazines back in the early nineties. I’ve never played it and I’ve never read any of the Xanth books, but if Jimmy Maher says a game is reasonably good and it’s a game from Legend, then there’s no excuse for me to not have it on my wish list.

Having a wish list works very well if you’re into collecting. It helps in keeping you focused and decide quickly if an opportunity presents itself. And that happened last week. Someone offered a bunch of games and was willing to sell them separately. In my experience it always helps if you offer to buy at least two games and besides Xanth another game from my wish list was on offer.

That other game was The Last Express. That game was also featured on the Digital Antiquarian’s blog and even made it to Jimmy’s Hall of Fame. I look forward to playing this game. Especially after I read Murder on the Orient-Express for the first time earlier this year.

The copy of The Last Express looks alright, but Companions of Xanth looks very battered. It is very worn and I wonder how it came to be this way. The front and back are a bit squashed in, but it doesn’t look like water damage. It’s a bit sad that the game is in such poor shape and I might trade up in the future, but for now this worn copy has found a new home with me.
