Unfocussed gaming fun. Who says I need to complete a game?

I’ve been struggling to focus on just one game lately. While I usually juggle a couple of titles at once, I normally have a clear main game – typically a big RPG – paired with a more casual side game like a racing or adventure title. Lately, though, even that routine isn’t sticking.

The problem probably comes from the main game I’m currently playing: Pillars of Eternity. I really like the vibe of the game and the story is okay too, but the gameplay itself just doesn’t captivate me like it should. Maybe it’s also the top-down view where all the characters seem very small. It doesn’t help that I’m playing the console version and I’m sitting farther away from the screen than I would playing the PC version.

I tried to pick the game up again after leaving it last year and while I managed to make quite a bit of progress, at one point I found myself playing bits of other games instead. Games like Zelda: The Minish Cap, a game that I played on the Wii U, but never finished. Also a bit of Banjo Tooie: Maybe because of the recent Evercade news. And I popped Ridge Racer in my N64: It’s all over the place. Different arcade games on the Evercade Alpha: Happy that it gets used again.

But the biggest distraction is The Crew Motorfest. I bought a Logitech G29 Steering wheel and stand and it’s so much fun! I never had a proper steering wheel setup and that puts a whole new level of immersion on gaming. It started when I mounted the old Microsoft Sidewinder to my desk to play some Outrun 2006: Coast to Coast.
I’ve always wanted something more and this time I bought a second hand G29. We – my son and I – started with The Crew, but I’m now playing the rally game WRC 10. Trying to improve myself at the same track gives a great adrenaline kick!

At this point I’m not sure if I will pick up Pillars of Eternity again, but I’m not worried. Gaming should be fun and no obligation. Besides: I have great memories of games that I never finished.
