It’s been a while since I last played a King’s Quest game. So the time is right for another adventure, the fifth installment in the series. I started by copying all the files from the floppies to a MisterFS shared folder on the ao486 core on the MiSTer. Sadly, I cannot dir into the folder from inside MS-DOS. Probably something with the memory managers. When I select only conventional memory, I can get the volume recognized, but still no dir.
And that wasn’t the only issue. I’m also missing disk 9 of 9. I have eight 3.5 inch floppies and one 5.25 inch floppy that claims to be disk 9 of 9. But I don’t have a 5.25 inch floppy disk drive for the PC. Luckily, there’s also the cd version inside the box. And that one works.
To get myself further into the mood, I read some reviews in my favorite games magazines from 1991. The reviewers from one magazine praise the graphics, but find the gameplay too easy. While the other magazine states that the puzzles are more obscure than in The Secret of Monkey Island, which is reviewed in the same issue. Before I knew it, it was an hour later and I was still browsing through the magazines.
I’ve read online that the voice acting in the game is ridiculous and that the cd-rom version only comes with voices and without text. I’ve played half an hour already (including the introduction), and I’m not too bothered by it. Maybe because I’m not a native English speaker.
I’m playing it on the ao486 core on the MiSter inside an A1200 case with the Mistress 1200 I/O board. Since the last time I posted about it, I’ve added some proper LEDs and managed to “fix” the issue with the spacebar I had. Turned it the reason the space bar didn’t fit was because there was something stuck inside the plunger that could be removed by pushing it out from the underside. It was probably a broken stem from the old space bar. D’oh! So simple!. Now the new spacebar fits, but it is a bit wobbly. Let’s hope the new mechanical keyboards from A1200.net won’t take forever.
I’m happy with the new setup. But also a bit sad at the same time. I’m always interested in new things for our old computers and one such thing is the new disk drive interface for the MiSTer. That sadly doesn’t fit inside the case with the Mistress 1200 I/O board. D’oh again!
My next project is to make space for a proper CRT VGA monitor. That will take some sawing and moving of stuff.
