I loved the Fallout TV series. It made me want to play the games again. But before I knew it I had unconsciously picked The Outer Worlds from the shelf, inserted it into my PS5 and booted it up. I remember buying this game back in 2019 for full price, a thing I almost never do. I have only done that recently with the still to arrive Baldur’s Gate 3 – Deluxe Edition, but I can’t remember exactly the last time I did that. Maybe it was Fallout IV even… But anyway, I was given a PlayStation giftcard and wasted it on a full price game. I was in two minds whether to get The Outer Worlds or Greedfall. Ultimately I decided on the former, which was probably the better choice for me.
After a promising start, I was quickly disappointed with the game however. Whilst beautiful, I found it too generic looking and too much like an fps game. I abandoned it after as second try to play Baldur’s Gate instead.
I’m now a couple of hours in and a bit further than I got the first two tribes. I must admit I’m enjoying it. Maybe it’s because it’s been awhile since I played a first person open(ish) world game. The last big game I played being the top-down Planescape: Torment. I always feel restricted in those games, although it has it’s advantages for gameplay and ambiance. It could also be that I’m more in the mood for the game now that I’ve recently watched the Fallout tv-series.
I’m hoping that I can finally play through the whole game. But that depends on whether I keep enjoying myself. I certainly hope so, because the pain of that full price purchase whilst never completing it still hurts.
