Am I going to get into text adventures?

Every day while on my way to work and every night while lying in bed, I enjoy reading books. I’ve done this for the last couple of years. But now I find myself a bit burnt out. I can’t get into a book. I tried a couple just to lose interest after the first fifty pages. And then I read a post about the game Hibernated 1: This place is death and being intrigued by the intro, I can see myself playing this. So I loaded it up on the Amiga and played for about an hour. I really got in the mood.

And then I figured: “What if I can play this on the go?”, so this morning I installed an app that let’s me play text adventures on my phone. It came with Zork I and before I knew it, I stood in front of the white house once again. Because I have stood here once or twice before, only to quit playing a few steps later. After twenty minutes I had, of course, got lost in the maze and got stabbed by the thief. I realized that most of these games probably don’t do well on the go, because you need to draw a map. I don’t know if I will enjoy that. I think I’ve read somewhere sometime that there’s auto-mapping available, but probably only on Windows. Also, having to type in directions (n, e, s, w, u, d) isn’t funny on your phone, so it would be ideal if there was an app with arrows on the screen. I’ll do some more digging.

Anyway, it seems like Hibernated is somewhat more straightforward than Zork, so I’ll probably give that one some more time. And maybe I’ll get it to work on my phone.
