Ever since I became serious about retro gaming on the Commodore 64, way back in 2018, I wanted a new enclosure for the system. The first one I got was a transparent C64c Kickstarter case. At the time, I’d missed out on a blue one. I kept scouring Ebay for a couple of years, but found them too expensive whenever one turned up, and at last settled on a SX-64 styled one from iComp. And while I enjoyed those cases, I was never completely happy with them. Especially after I bought a THE C64 which has the original breadbin style case, the one I had as a kid. I preferred the transparent and SX-64 styled cases to an original breadbin case though, because I want something special.
And that option became available when Retro Fuzion started a crowdfunding for new breadbin cases. I option for a green one, because I like color, and I already have a red Amiga 1200 case, and a blue A500 case under way through another crowdfunding campaign (Oh, how glad I will be when that campaign finally delivers! To be rid of update 849, or whatever. Imagine the bliss…). Anyway, the green case looks stunning. I opted for dark red elements. The yellow Turbo Chameleon V2 looks especially striking.
I have only two minor gripes with it. The side plate with the cutouts for the ports isn’t secured at the top. So it slightly wobbles whenever I reset the C64 Reloaded. And the bottom is slightly skewed, so the whole thing wobbles on a smooth surface. Luckily my desk is a bit crooked too, so I don’t notice it. I’ll have to ask if someone else has this problem. Finally, the 3D printed cover for the power connector for the C64 Reloaded doesn’t fit in a breadbin case. I’ll try to make a tiny cutout or see if I can order another one somewhere.
The green ArcadeR joystick is just a slightly different shade of green, which is too bad.
Now I have to decide which keys I will add to the case. The beige or brown ones? Neither looks as great as could be. Hopefully, the keyboard with matching keycaps from the other crowdfunding campaign will arrive in 2025, although that campaign seems plagued by setbacks that haunt most keycaps campaigns.
