After suffering through multiple crashes, Planescape: Torment froze up on me close to the end of the game. I’m playing on PS5 and judging by the comments on the internet, I’m far from the only one who experiences frequent crashes. Quite unforgivable for a game that has been out as long as this is. I’m very glad that I didn’t spring for the collector’s edition.
The crash occurred while talking to Deionarra. She’s supposed to give me important information and a stat boost. Quite an essential element of the story and ending of the game for the first time player.
I nevertheless persevered and continued on to the Fortress of Regrets. I managed to unlock the first area, but died so many times that I eventually got the message that I had been decapacitated and could no longer complete the game. That made me rage quit the game.
It turns out that I died so often during the game that there are way too many enemies in the Fortress. My stats also weren’t very high.
I decided to give up and watch the ending on YouTube. Weak, I know, but I just couldn’t be bothered to go back to a previous save knowing that there were bugs that don’t give me the full experience anyway. I mean, just browsing through the bestiary crashes the game. And going through the ending forces you to watch unskippable cutscenes, a thing I would expect a remaster to fix.
So I watched one of the endings on YouTube, which ultimately was a good thing, because it showed me that the game has some terrific animations for high level spells. A thing my fighter character wouldn’t permit me to see. And my mage companions didn’t have those spells, or it wasn’t necessary to use them against the mostly weak opponents. Even the fallen angel was not too difficult to kill without those.
The cool spells that I missed out on, and the alternate endings are reasons that I might replay the game at some point in the distant future. But I will not be playing the Enhanced Edition then. The regular PC version (with some mods) will offer a much better experience.
