Completed the gold box collection with Treasures of the Savage Frontier

I finally found a copy of the last gold box game from SSI that I didn’t have in the collection yet that was affordable, in a good enough condition and that was the right version of the box. And that game is Treasures of the Savage Frontier.

Not only was the price for the game quite reasonable, the shipping costs, although still too high to feel good about paying for it, were also not too ridiculously high. These games are a little hard to find in Europe, so you have to look for them in the US. And because shipping rates have exploded in the last couple of years, that quickly makes buying from the US very unattractive. In this case, the shipping costs were about half the price of the game itself. But you have to pay import taxes also.

In the past I have used a shipping service, but that’s only an option if you want to buy multiple items. And I know myself. If I go that route, I’ll buy too much stuff.

One of the reasons that it was not too expensive was that the actual game isn’t in the box. There are some floppies included. But those are of different games. I don’t care too much, because I’m not going to play the game anyway… Uh, I mean, I’m not going to play the game from actual floppies. There is also no code wheel included, which is kind of a bummer, because I like those.

Most importantly however, the two manuals are included and they aren’t the cheapo black and white versions.

And lastly, it was the right version of the box with the seperate cover and bottom. And not the one where the top folds open. That matches the other gold box games in my collection.

As with most of my games, they are a mix of different systems. In this case C64, IBM PC and Amiga. That’s no problem for me.

With this addition, another milestone for my collection has been reached. The only gold box game that I haven’t got is Neverwinter Nights. But I don’t think I’ll ever own that one. And that’s no problem, because it isn’t part of a series.

Of course, I would like to have a few more SSI games. They aren’t too hard to find. And I’m not in a rush. I have been patient with building up this sub collection also.

The cover art of this game is one of the best of the series. Although when you take your time to take a good look at them, they all have something to them. Very nice pictures.

The only downside with this addition is that there now is even less space on the shelf to put one game with the cover out front. But if more games arrive, I’ll have to rearrange them anyway.
