It’s always nice when the postman arrives with a package you don’t expect (if it’s something pleasant at least, which in my case it always has been.) Yesterday such an event took place. I only knew what it was when I had unpacked it. It was a set of new keycaps for my Amiga from A1200.net!
Now it’s been years since I backed their crowdfunding campaign and it was a very weird process to follow with all the hiccups they encountered during the last couple of years. I backed multiple projects from them and by now I barely remember which is which. Back in 2019 (I think) I backed a new A1200 case with new keycaps, both Special Editions. Then later on, I backed a new A500 case and two different sets of keycaps, one plain and one in a funky color. Sometime during the manufacturing phase, I received a message that with all the setbacks the team had decided that the Skid Row keycaps for the Skid Row A1200 case weren’t going to be manufactured. Instead, I choose for another Special Edition keycaps set. I don’t remember which. At first I chose to have the A1200 case delivered when the keycaps were going to be finished, but after a while I asked them to send the case ahead and it has been sitting on my desk for slightly more than two years now.
And now I have a brand-new set of keycaps to finish the A1200. Or so I thought…
Because while it is definitely an improvement over the old and scratched up keys that were in it, one thing doesn’t fit, and that’s the spacebar. It has a square stem, just like the other keycaps, but while those fit on the mounting plate, the spacebar doesn’t. It probably requires a round stem and maybe that’s supposed to go on an Amiga 500. I will have to do some searching about that. For now, I will have to make due with the old and greyer and yellower spacebar. Maybe I can source a plain white spacebar from A1200.net.
Or I will just have to be a LITTLE bit more patient and wait for the Special Edition set that still has to be produced. Only then will it be truly Special!
